Ship Size.
We call ships over 65,000 gross registered tonnes "Mega-Ships". There are many in the 70,000 tonnes range, and a few in the over 100,000 tonnes range. Tonnage is a measurement of the volume of water the ship displaces - but generally a Mega-Ship is about three football fields long, and about 10-12 decks high. Most new ships (built post 1990) are in this class. Mega-ships are best chosen by first time cruisers who are unsure of the cruise experience, and want to ensure that they are not "bored". There are however, newer ships that fall in the mid-sized range of about 40-65,000 tonnes, but the majority of the ships in this range are older. Smaller ships, (less than 40,000 tonnes) are much more intimate in feel. There is significantly less crew and passengers on board, and it is easier to "get to know" them. Smaller ships do not offer the same selection of entertainment options that Mega-ships do. The showrooms are less than spectacular, the casinos are small, and the focus is much less on being entertained, and more on destinations, conversation, and interaction. |
